Moving Scams Exposed

At Gordon Moving and Storage, we’ve recently spoken with several customers who almost fell victim—or unfortunately did fall victim—to online moving scams. These schemes are more common than ever, especially when people are looking for budget-friendly moving solutions.

One of our customers lost their deposit to a so-called “mover” who offered a low upfront price, only to demand a much higher payment just before moving day. When the customer refused, they lost the deposit and had to scramble to find a reputable mover.

If you’re planning a move, this post is for you. We’re exposing how these scams work, what red flags to watch for, and how to protect your money and your belongings.

What Is an Online Moving Scam?

Online moving scams typically involve a company—or in some cases, a “broker”—offering very low rates to attract customers. They often require a deposit up front, sometimes as much as 50% of the quoted price.

Then comes the bait and switch.

On moving day, you’re told your items are heavier than estimated, or there are surprise fees not disclosed earlier. Suddenly, you’re being asked to pay hundreds or thousands more—and if you refuse, they may cancel the move or even hold your belongings hostage.

In some cases, the movers don’t show up at all.

Real-World Warning Signs

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation and consumer protection agencies, here are some red flags that can indicate a moving scam:

🚩 Unrealistically Low Quotes

If one mover gives you a quote that’s significantly lower than everyone else, it’s likely too good to be true.

🚩 Large Deposits Required Upfront

Legitimate moving companies typically do not require large deposits. Scammers ask for money before the move—then disappear or upcharge later.

🚩 Cash-Only or Wire Transfer Payments

These forms of payment are harder to trace and often non-refundable. Reputable movers offer secure, trackable payment options.

🚩 No On-Site or Video Inspection

If a mover doesn’t ask to see your belongings—either in person or via a virtual walkthrough—they have no way of giving a reliable estimate. That’s a setup for later “weight adjustments” or fees.

🚩 No Clear Licensing

A trustworthy mover will always provide a USDOT number (for interstate moves), state/local licensing, and full insurance documentation. If that info isn’t readily available—run.

Why These Scams Work

Moving is stressful. And when someone offers you a cheaper, easier option that seems to check the boxes, it’s tempting to say yes—especially under time pressure.

But scammers rely on that pressure. They count on customers not reading contracts, not comparing estimates, and not verifying credentials.

That’s why it’s critical to slow down, ask questions, and look for the signs of a trustworthy mover.

How to Protect Yourself

Before you sign anything or hand over a dollar, make sure you:

  • Get multiple quotes and compare pricing, services, and payment terms.

  • Demand a written estimate that clearly outlines weight, fees, and delivery timeline.

  • Verify licenses and insurance through FMCSA or your state’s public utilities commission.

  • Avoid large deposits—especially if required in cash or wire transfer.

  • Check reviews and references, especially on neutral platforms like Google or the Better Business Bureau.
